(KAIR)--The Atchison High School teacher, arrested Wednesday for having an alleged sexual relationship with a student, made her first appearance in an Atchison County Courtroom Friday morning.
At that time, a status hearing for Shelly Aversman was scheduled for the afternoon of December 28th.
Aversman, arrested by the KBI shortly before noon Wednesday and charged with one felony count of unlawful sexual conduct, is currently free on bond of $50,000.
Authorities say none of the alleged crimes with the then 17-year-old student occurred on school district property.
Aversman had been placed on administrative leave from her duties at USD 409 last month.
That word comes in a statement released Thursday by Superintendent Dr. Susan Myers.
Myers says as of November 30th, Aversman has not been in the school district and has not worked with any students.
Myers says it was late Wednesday that the district learned of the criminal charges faced by Aversman in connection with events that occurred in 2012.
Myers says the district will cooperate with law enforcement officials during the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.
