(KAIR)--A fire was reported at the old Martin East Elementary School in Atchison late Thursday afternoon.
Fire Department Captain Lee Kipple says firefighters were called to the school, located in the 500 block of Division Street just after 4:50. Heavy smoke was present inside the building, and crews were able to locate a small fire on an old chair inside of the school's gymnasium.
The fire was quickly extinguished, and crews were able to leave the scene just after 6:00.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
