11/10/2015

(KAIR)--Jordan Thomas, a 2011 graduate of Maur Hill-Mount Academy, and a current senior at Kansas State University, has been named a finalist for two national scholarship competitions.

According to a news release from K-State, Thomas, majoring in anthropology, will interview for both the Rhodes and Marshall scholarships, and has participated in many research exercises, exposing him to a wide range of cultures during his studies, earning him consideration for the honors.

Rhodes scholarships are awarded to 32 students from the United States each year and provide full funding for one or two years of study at Oxford University in England. Marshall scholarships are awarded to as many as 40 students each year and provide full funding for one or two years of study in the United Kingdom. Finalists for each of the scholarships will interview in mid-November.

This past summer, he spent time in New Mexico to research a local Pueblo community, and earlier this year, he lived in Kansas City to assist residents in developing an urban farm. In 2014, he bicycled and hitchhiked to Colombia, where he lived in a retirement home to study the customs of its residents. He helped produce a video titled “To Live In This World” about the experience, with the video later presented at an international film festival in Paris, France.

Among his other achievements, Thomas has researched the correlation between social cohesion and labor productivity on a Costa Rican fruit farm, and assisted with a  political campaign for the Kansas House of Representatives in 2012.

He is the son of Ryan Thomas, of Atchison, and Susan Biggs Thomas, of Overland Park
