Motorists Urged To Be Cautious Around School Buses
11/09/2015

(KAIR)--A school bus is one of the safest modes of transportation for children going to and from school every day. However, the greatest number of child injures related to school buses are kids getting on and off the bus.

That, according to Safe Kids Kansas Spokeswoman Cheri Sage, who adds that motorists should know that “it is illegal in Kansas for vehicles to pass a school bus when its red signal lights are flashing. So that means vehicles in both directions, whether you are behind or approaching; and it is also important that when you see that school bus even before their lights are flashing, anytime you are around a school bus, you should be hyper aware that there are going to be children that are going to around that bus.”

Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson says there is a penalty associated with anyone who violates that law and that “we charge those people based on the information given to us by the drivers when people do violate it. I'm not sure that it is rampant, but it doesn't take but one mishap to seriously hurt a child when people violate that...children are children, but children sometimes, I think we have all watched them, still look, but sometimes they don't, and that is reason for the law.”

Wilson says the penalty for passing a stopped school bus with flashing lights is a $75 fine.
