(Nebraska Radio Network)-- On Thursday, a Nebraska legislative oversight committee heard about some of the problems that led to the Tecumseh prison riot on Mothers Day.
Marshall Lux, State Ombudsman says certain inmates came to protest changes in prison policy, others took advantage of confusion and assaulted staff. The riot started.
State Corrections Director Scott Frakes acknowledges the Tecumseh state prison remains shaken by the Mother's Day riot.
Frakes told the committee that staff and management at Tecumseh have been working long shifts under strained conditions.
The riot left two inmates dead, staff and other inmates assaulted. Property at the prison also was destroyed during the riot.
Lux says it didn't help that Tecumseh didn't have enough guards on hand that Sunday. He says pay needs to be approved at Tecumseh to attract and retain staff, and the frequent use of mandatory overtime needs to be curtailed.
Frakes says the prison facility north of Tecumseh will be brought back to where it needs to be and then move it forward.
