Better Tasting Water On Tap For Atchison Residents
11/05/2015

(KAIR)--Atchison city residents will soon notice an improvement in the taste and odor in the water coming into their homes.

The improvement comes as the new ozone filtration system is fully implemented at the city's water treatment plant.

City Public Works and Utilities Director Justin Pregont says treating river water is a difficult process, and has caused some problems in the past. “Seasonally, we have gotten complaints from people...about the taste and odor of the water, but with this new treatment process, we should be able to better manage that, and our water should maintain a more neutral taste and odor really throughout the year.”

Pregont adds that the new filtration system is much more effective in treating water, resulting in the improved odor and taste. He says “ozone essentially zaps everything that is contained...any sort of microbe or bacteria, or anything that's inside of water gets broken up through the ozone process...and then as it goes through our filters later on on the water treatment process, the filters capture all of that, and what you end up with is a pure source of water. So you can think of ozone as a form of disinfection.”

Pregont says the new treatment started on the city's main water line earlier this week, and residents should see a noticeable change in the next few days.
