Gas Smell Leads To Evacuation
11/02/2015

(KAIR)--Elementary school students in Atchison County's USD 377 were evacuated from the building for over a hour Monday morning after the smell of gas was detected, likely from one of the new heating units installed in the building.

Superintendent Steve Wiseman says “in one classroom, there was a smell of gas. It was reported immediately by the teacher, and then so we immediately evacuated the students  to the high school, called the P1 people in who are on site. They came in and found the problem, and the solution has been to shut the gas off to all the units, go back and run gas leak tests. We have no other gas leaks in the building.”

Wiseman adds that crews plan to come in after school hours to make all needed repairs.

Wiseman says that students were never in any kind of danger, and the affected classroom was thoroughly aired out before students returned.
