(KLZA)-- The Nebraska Lottery is warning players about a lottery scam that is spreading on social media.
Posts have recently appeared online that claim, “POWERBALL is giving free $1 Million Jackpot Online Instantly.” Visitors that click on the post are directed to a website with instructions to claim a $1 million prize. A variation of this scam has also been seen using the Mega Millions® game.
While these sites may appear legitimate, they are not connected in any way to the real Powerball® or Mega Millions games. There is no way to win a lottery prize if you haven’t bought a ticket at a Nebraska Lottery retailer.
Acting Nebraska Lottery Director Jill Marshall encourages players to be wary of anything offering a free lottery prize, noting if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Anyone who receives a questionable phone call, email, or mailing, or notices a suspicious website, is encouraged to contact Nebraska Lottery Security at 800-587-5200.
