(KMZA)--Construction of the new Nemaha County Jail remains on track, with the facility set to open early next year.
That word from Sheriff Rich Vernon who provided an update to the Nemaha County Commission on Monday. “The main structure of the building is almost complete,” Vernon told MSC News in an interview following Monday's meeting. “We'll be moving on to the inside and doing all the work with the doors and the wiring, and the electronic equipment. Everything is on schedule, everything is under budget at this time, so everything's looking great and we hope to have the jail turned over to us the 24th of January is what they're predicting, so we can start using it as our new facility.”
Vernon told the Commission that once the construction is finished, staff will be trained to use the new equipment, which will likely take around two weeks.
When the training is finalized, inmates will begin to be housed in the new facility.
Groundbreaking for the construction of the new 34-bed, 15,000-square-foot jail, was held in November of last year.
That followed the Commission in October of last year accepting a total bid of nearly $4.6 million to make the new jail a reality. It will be attached to the current Nemaha County Law Enforcement Center.
AHRS Construction of Bern is serving as construction manager at risk for the project.
The County is financing the new jail addition through existing capital outlay funds.
