(KAIR)--The 19-year-old Arkansas man, accused of the fatal shooting of an Atchison man earlier this month, is formally fighting extradition from Missouri to Kansas.

On Thursday, Terell Dixon was charged in Henry County, Missouri as a fugitive out of state due to his refusal to waive extradition. The Court Clerk's Office says he is likely to appear in a courtroom on Monday.

Dixon was arrested in that jurisdiction about 18 hours after allegedly shooting to death 24-year-old Winston Downing in the parking lot of an Atchison convenience store on the evening of September 9th.

Authorities say a handgun was found among Dixon's belongings when arrested by Clinton, Missouri Police, but it's not yet confirmed if it's the same one investigators allege was used in the shooting.

Authorities have also not yet made public how Dixon is alleged to have made his way to Henry County, located about halfway between Kansas City and Springfield, from Atchison, after his alleged role in the shooting.

He was taken into custody in the Missouri location on an Atchison County District Court Warrant charging him with second degree murder. On Thursday, Atchison County Attorney Gerald Kuckelman filed the paperwork formally charging Dixon with the crime.

Authorities say Dixon, who hails from Arkansas, lived in Atchison for less than a year prior to the shooting.
