Doniphan Co Awarded Grant for Signs
09/17/2015

(KNZA)--Doniphan County has been awarded a nearly $400,000 grant for new road signage.

The County Commission was informed this week of the grant award from the Kansas Department of Transportation through the High Risk Rural Roads program.
The Commission voted to sign a letter accepting the grant, which doesn’t require a local match.

The grant will be used to replace signs on major collector routes in all three commission districts to meet federal retro-reflectivity standards.

Commissioners were also informed that a bid letting for the replacement of a bridge in Independence Township will take place October 21st.  The project is scheduled for 85 working days.

The Commission voted to hire Schwab-Eaton, of Manhattan, as the engineer consulting and inspection firm for the project.

Representatives of the Pony Express Association and Doniphan County Historical Society met with the Commission to request the county’s assistance in erecting thirty-one signs on road rights-of-way in the county depicting the original Pony Express Trail.

The Commission approved having the county road department crews assist in erecting the signs. The National Parks Department will supply the signs, with Doniphan County furnishing the posts and labor.
