(KAIR)--The Atchison County Commission is planning several cuts after a first draft of the 2016 budget was presented to them during a meeting earlier this week.
Commission Chair Bill Pohl says several cuts have already been made to the county Road and Bridge Department and eliminated some requested equipment. Pohl says that “he hates to do that, but we have been really updating our machinery, so this year we are going to have to kinda slide...we took out a dump truck, and a tractor, and a ton truck, but we did purchase a new oil truck, and a chipper truck, because I told them that I did not want to spend any more money on chip and seal until we get this figured out right.”
Pohl adds that it is possible that the Sheriff will also see some cuts to his department. “He is wanting a couple new vehicles, that's questionable yet...he has some court security...we really did not get into the Sheriff's too much, we are going to continue with it Friday as well. There are some departments we are going to do some cutting on...what they asked for, we've got to trim some of that down.”
Pohl says the mill levy included in the proposed budget was higher than he had hoped, but Commissioners will be working through the day on Friday to make the needed cuts to bring it down, and possibly have the budget ready for publication by the end of the day.
