Woman Arrested After Brown Co Chase
08/07/2015

(KNZA)--A Smith Center woman was arrested early Friday morning after leading Brown County authorities on a pursuit in a stolen vehicle.

Brown County Sheriff  John Merchant says a deputy initiated a vehicle stop in the area of Oregon Street and Hopi Drive near Hiawatha.  However, the driver decided to leave and led officers on a chase lasting about 20 minutes.

The 2002 Chevy Blazer traveled east down Oregon Street, went south on U.S. 73 Highway to 180th Street, and circled back to Highway 73.

A Brown County deputy deployed stop sticks at U.S. 73 and Iowa Street in Hiawatha, which deflated 3 out of the 4 tires on the Blazer.

Merchant says the vehicle was finally stopped on U.S. 73 Highway near 270th Street.  He said the driver attempted to turn around on the highway, which gave deputies an opportunity to box in the vehicle, causing it to stop.

25-year-old Brooklyn St Clair was taken into custody and booked into the Brown County Jail on charges of driving under the influence, felony fleeing and eluding, transporting an open container, reckless driving and for refusing a DUI test.

It was later determined that the vehicle she was driving had been reported stolen from Smith Center earlier in the morning.  As a result, St Clair faces an additional charge of possession of stolen property.  Other charges are pending.

No injuries occurred or damages to law enforcement vehicles involved in the pursuit.

Assisting were the Hiawatha Police Department, along with the Sac and Fox and Iowa Tribal Police Departments.
