(KLZA)-- During a town hall meeting in Falls City last week Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts touted the property tax relief the Legislature approved this past session. Ricketts says he understands, there is a lot left to do.
Mark Caspers who pays property taxes in several different school districts says the State should help lead school districts to decrease the property taxes they levy on landowners. Caspers said perhaps the state could offer some guidance on consolidating school districts or consolidate administration of districts.
Gov. Ricketts says there have been a lot of ideas proposed, noting last year there were 26 bills presented on property tax relief, but noted there was no consensus to get the bills out of committee. Ricketts says he is working with his team to strategize ideas.
Ricketts said there are no easy answers to the property tax burden on farmers, noting it will take hard work and time to build a consensus within the body about a relief package for property taxes.
Another complaint brought up was the disproportionate amount of taxes paid by farmers compared to those who live in urban areas.
