(KNZA)--The Brown County State Fishing Lake remains under a warning status related to blue-green algae. That word from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, which says it is the only local lake affected by the seasonal problem so far this summer.

The KDHE reminds lake users that boating and fishing are safe on lakes under a warning, but direct contact with the water should be avoided. It is safe to eat fish caught during a harmful blue-green algae outbreak, as long as the fish is rinsed with clean water; consume only the fillet portion and discard all other parts. Hands should also be washed with clean water after handling fish taken from an affected lake. Pets should not be allowed to drink contaminated lake water, as blue-green algae could cause illness or even prove to be fatal if ingested.
