(KAIR)--Each year, the Atchison community honors those who best carry on the spirit of Amelia Earhart with the Amelia Earhart Pioneering Achievement Award.
Sophia Danenberg, the first African American woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest is this year's recipient.
Danenberg says that she thinks of herself as an average climber, and that she was surprised that she could be the first woman to accomplish the feat. Her friend encouraged her to start climbing, with her first major climb coming in 2002 when she climbed Mout Rainier in Washington State.
Danenberg will be part of a speaker's symposium Saturday morning at 11:00 in the O'Malley-McAllister auditorium on the campus of Benedictine College. The event is free, and open to the public.
Danenberg will then be honored following the symposium at 12:30, during the Pioneering Achievement Award Luncheon, also held at Benedictine College. Tickets for the luncheon are $15.
