(KNZA)--The Hiawatha Board of Education Monday evening elected officers for the 2015-16 school year as three new members took their seats on the Board.
Elected as board president was Dr. Pete Rosa. Denise Elffner was elected vice-president.
It was the first meeting for new board members Amy Kopp, Tom Simmer and Jeff Brockhoff who were elected in April.
As part of the district’s technology plan, the board approved the purchase of 100 new Chromebooks for the middle school and 100 HP Stream Laptops for the high school for a total cost of just over $64,000 under a state contract. The Board also voted to seek bids for the purchase of 100 LearnPads for the elementary school.
The district will be getting a new 60-passenger school bus. The Board approved the low bid submitted by Midwest Transit in the amount of $87,620 through the state bus purchasing program.
The Board also accepted a just under $50,000 food service equipment grant from the state Department of Education. It will be used to purchase new dishwashers for the district’s three schools.
And the Board accepted with regret the retirement resignations of three longtime high school teachers, effective at the end of the 2015-16 school year. They include Spanish teacher Karen Searight, computer science teacher Melissa Trujillo and science teacher Chris Vitt.
