(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Commission Monday evening approved for publication a proposed 2016 city budget of $6.1 million that calls for five-mill property tax levy increase.
The proposed budget contains an estimated tax rate of 52.5 mills, which is to generate more than $1.1 million.
The mill levy increase is being attributed to a decrease in the city’s assessed valuation, which fell more than $120,000 to about $21.6 million.
The Commission will consider adoption of the budget following a public hearing at their July 20th meeting.
In other business, the Commission approved the additional expenditure of up to $67,500 for street improvements in the Meyer East Subdivision.
City Administrator Mike Nichols said $70,000 had already been budgeted this year for curb and gutter replacement along Chippewa Street, but he said the street has to be fixed as well.
Nichols said there are some really rough spots on the north side of Chippewa and the original proposal of replacing the curb and gutters only would barely be a band aid.
