Unemployment Up in Area NEK Counties

(KNZA)--Unemployment was up in area northeast Kansas counties in May compared to the month before.

According to the latest figures from the Kansas Department of Labor, Atchison County had the highest unemployment rate at 6.3 percent while Nemaha County had the lowest at 3 percent.

Elsewhere, Brown County’s jobless rate in May stood at 4.3 percent; Doniphan, 4.8 percent; Jackson, 4.2 percent; Jefferson, 4.6 percent; Leavenworth, 4.8 percent; Marshall 3.1 percent and Pottawatomie, 3.9 percent.

All the figures were up from April, but down from May of last year in Jefferson, Leavenworth and Marshall Counties.  

Statewide, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in May was 4.4 percent.  That’s up from 4.3 percent in April but down from 4.5 percent in May 2014.
