Atchison City Hall To Make ADA Improvements
06/17/2015

(KAIR)--The Atchison City Hall is receiving an upgrade that would make it easier for those with disabilities to get around the building.

Commissioners voted unanimously Monday to enter into a contract with Overhead Door to replace the door knobs in the building with levers.

City Public Works and Utilities Director Justin Pregont says the upgrade was needed in order to bring the city more up to date with standards set by the Americans With Disabilities Act, and that “one of the priorities of our ADA advisory board that they have identified is to do everything we can to make our City Hall facility 100 percent ADA compliant and accessible to anybody who is using that facility. For them, it's a place where the city commission meets, where city utility bills are paid...it's our flagship facility, of critical importance...for them it was an important priority for making that facility 100 percent ASA compliant and converting door knobs to door levers is one of the big steps that takes us in that direction.”

Pregont says the improvements will cost approximately $14,000, and is scheduled to be completed in the next few months.
