Suicide Prevention Focus of Local Grant
06/08/2015

(KNZA)--A $10,000 mini-grant is secured by Hiawatha-based KANZA Mental Health and Guidance Center, as awarded by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services.

KANZA Mental Health CEO David Elsbury says the grant will be used to provide behavioral health education and training to the Brown County community. “Specifically our grant application was to try to address risks of suicide and suicidal behavior, statistically somewhat high within the county as compared to across the state,” Elsbury tells MSC News. “The idea is that if we can train numerous persons in Brown County then we can get help to someone faster, and maybe prevent something serious that might occur, as well as alleviate some of the mental health difficulties that might exist.”

Gaining the grant follows month's of work towards that goal, with a group of more than 15, representing multiple agencies and groups in Brown County, helping to oversee that effort since October of last year.

Join us Wednesday as we talk in depth with Elsbury about the grant, and the steps leading up to receiving it.

We'll do that during our latest edition of More Than Just a Soundbite, first at 6:15 in the morning and again at 1:05 that afternoon, on KNZA-FM 103.9 and KMZA-FM 92.1.
