(KNZA)--A St. Joseph mother convicted in the malnutrition-related death of her 7-month-old baby boy has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
23-year-old Macayla Armstrong was handed the sentence Thursday in a Buchanan County courtroom.
She pleaded guilty in April to a felony charge of abuse or neglect of a child.
Authorities say the baby boy weighed less than nine pounds when he died in December. Court documents allege Armstrong failed to provide food, medical care and sanitary living conditions for the child.
KQ2-TV reports Armstrong will have to serve 12 ½ years before she’s eligible for parole.
