(KNZA)--Healthy foods could be had at a reduced cost for local seniors, courtesy of a state program encouraging use of farmers’ markets.
The Kansas Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition program will provide qualifying low-income seniors with checks totaling $30 to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs.
The products must be sold by authorized farmers at local participating farmers’ markets now through November 1st.
The checks, provided in $5 increments, can be picked up at the Northeast Kansas Area Agency on Aging office in Hiawatha.
Applications for the program are available on a first-come, first-serve basis at the office during weekdays.
Questions can be asked by calling 785-742-7152 or 1-800-883-2549.
