(KNZA)--Several Hiawatha residents want to see steps taken to slow down traffic on Cheyenne Street between 4th and 6th Streets due to safety concerns.
Jay Boyles along with Ryan and Kelle Meininger appeared before the Hiawatha City Commission Monday evening.
Boyles addressed Commissioners, saying there is a concern regarding the potential for a pedestrian accident based on the number of children walking along the street to go to the new basketball court at a nearby park. “We're just trying to figure out what we need to do, or what we can do,” Boyles told the Commission. “The park is amazing. The basketball courts are full all the time. It's great to see, but where we don't have sidewalks or anything, everybody walks down the street, and the traffic goes through there really quick now.”
Police Chief John Defore said “ Caution Children Playing” signs have been ordered. In addition, he said he will have officers do extra patrolling in the area.
Defore also said if a majority of neighbors in the area are in favor, he could bring a request to the Commission for the installation of speed bumps.
