Hiawatha to Seek Grant for Park Improvements
05/19/2015

(KNZA)--The city of Hiawatha will seek a share of 12 million dollars in a special round of grant funding being made available through the Kansas Department of Commerce to fund improvements to Bruning Park.

Following a hearing Monday evening drawing no public comment, the City Commission approved an application for a just over $318,000 Community Development Block Grant. The city would provide a 10 percent match or nearly $32,000.

On the recommendation of City Administrator Mike Nichols, the Commission approved awarding a contract to Lawrence-based Governmental Assistance Services to serve as the grant administrator for a fee not to exceed $20,000.  In addition, the commission approved awarding a contract to Lawrence-based BG Consultants to provide engineering services. Both are contingent on the grant being awarded.

The application is due June 1st, and awarded projects will be announced July 15th.
