Tecumseh State Prison

( AP / KLZA)-- Nebraska corrections officials say they believe other inmates are likely responsible for the deaths of two prisoners who died during a disturbance at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution north of Tecumseh.

A news release from Communications and Legislation Coordinator James Foster says that at about 1 a-m Monday morning staff regained control of the maximum security prison north of Tecumseh. The Nebraska State Patrol is on-site and investigating the events that began Sunday afternoon and continued into Monday morning.

Two inmates were found dead in one of the housing units.  The cause of death remains under investigation.

Foster also noted that all inmates are accounted for and the public is safe. Staff members are continuing to manage the facility, which remains locked down until further notice.

State Corrections Director Scott Frakes said at a news conference that 100 to 200 of the roughly 1,000 inmates at the prison were involved in the disturbance that began in front of a housing unit at the prison.

Two prison staff members were assaulted in the initial disturbance.  Frakes said one inmate was shot in the leg by a tower guard and another inmate was injured by a rubber projectile.

Multiple incidents began in several housing units following the initial incident. Those included fires and other disruptions to which staff members were responding.  The Corrections Emergency Response Team, Special Operations Team and Crisis Negotiations Team were all called in to assist.

While all the details cannot be released due to the ongoing investigation, Foster did release the following:

A recreation staff member barricaded herself in an office in the gymnasium and was rescued by special teams members.

Inmates had control of two housing units, including staff offices.  Control centers were not breached during the disturbance.

The special teams rescued multiple staff from two housing units.

Housing Units 2 and 3 sustained the most damage.

Damage included: fire and smoke damage, windows being broken out, ceiling tiles torn down,  a wall constructed to separate two living units was torn down. Staff offices were damaged,  cameras were taken down and destroyed and there was water damage.

Two staff members were injured during the initial altercation, both received non-life threatening injuries. The injured staff members were Corporal Hatzenbuehler and Caseworker Guren.  Both have returned to work.

On inmate was shot in the leg, suffering a non-life threatening injury.

One inmate was injured during a staff use-of-force.

Two other inmates received non-lefe-threatening injuries caused by other inmates.

Two inmates died – cause of death unknown, however, appears to be caused by other inmates.

The special teams assisted staff in regaining control of the housing units and other areas of the prison. Foster thanked the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Tecumseh Volunteer Fire Department, the Nebraska State Patrol and the State Fire Marshal’s Office for their ongoing assistance during these incidents.
