(MSC News)--National Police Week begins next week; and, in honor of the annual commemoration, the State of Kansas will hold its traditional Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony on Friday in Topeka.
It begins at noon at the Kansas Statehouse, with a wreath-laying ceremony to follow at the Kansas Law Enforcement Monument located on the Statehouse grounds.
This year's ceremony, which also includes a Thursday night Candlelight Vigil, will see the induction of a fallen area officer into the Kansas Law Enforcement Monument.
He is Topeka Police Corporal Jason Harwood, who died September 7th of last year when shot to death during a vehicle stop on the east side of Topeka.
In 2014, 117 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty across the United States, according to online data provided by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
So far this year, 36 officers have died in the line of duty nationwide.
