(KAIR)--The students of Atchison High School's National Honor Society are doing their part to help those in need.
National Honor Society member Haven Fry says the drive is a project as well as a fundraiser because it not only benefits the organization, but lots of other people as well. The shoes collected will be redistributed through an organization called funds to orgs, and that will help people in impoverished nations to start, maintain, and grow businesses that will allow them to feed, cloth, and house their families.
Fry adds that the funds received from collecting the shoes will be spread around the local community. Part of the money will be donated to the local food pantry, backpack buddies, and the Atchison Elementary Summer program. Another portion will be donated to cystic fibrosis and Shriner's Hospital, and a small portion will be used for an upcoming project at the school.
Fry says the organization has collected about 46 bags containing 25 pairs of shoes, but their goal is to collect 300 bags.
If you are interested in donating shoes, Fry says bins are placed at all Atchison Public schools, the Atchison Library, the YMCA, Trinity Lutheran Church, the Methodist Church, and the Later Day Saints Church.
Bins will also be placed in front of Atchison High school from 7:30am-3:30pm Tuesday and Wednesday.
The final day to make a donation is May 16th.
