Atchison Conducts Goal Setting Workshop
05/05/2015

(KAIR)--Atchison city officials came together Monday night for their annual goal setting workshop, one of the first steps in the yearly budget process.

City Manager Trey Cocking says the purpose of the workshop was to try and get a strategic picture of what needs to be done, and that “this year was a little bit different of course with two new commissioners. We really wanted to prioritize our outstanding goals, take a look at those and see if there is still support among the commissioners to do those, and then really it came down to start thinking about long term planning and coming up with strategies for success.”

Cocking opened the meeting by reviewing some of the current goals of the city including aggressive marketing of the community, the possibility of conducting a retail market study, the Glacial Hills Scenic Byway Trail project, rehabilitation of dilapidated housing, and ADA improvements in the city. Participants were broken into small groups to discuss the goals. Input was sought on how the city was doing in achieving them, as well as how they could be met.

Groups were also also asked to provide their ideas on what the future goals of the city should be. Suggestions included bringing better, more attractive jobs the community, creating a partnership with Benedictine College, and building loft apartments near the downtown area.

Officials will conduct a second budget workshop on May 28th.
