(KNZA)--Faced with a projected more than $500,000 budget shortfall for next school year, the Prairie Hills USD 113 Board of Education has approved a number of budget cuts.
Superintendent Todd Evans presented a list of cuts to the Board last week for their consideration, which were compiled by the administration team.
Approved was the elimination of summer school at the Sabetha Elementary School, Sabetha Middle School and Wetmore Attendance Center.
The vacant elementary position at the Sabetha Elementary School won’t be filled, making three sections of kindergarten for next school year. In addition, the board voted to discontinue the after school program at the Sabetha Middle School and Wetmore Attendance Center beginning next school year.
Evans said any of the programs could be reinstated once funding improves.
Following an executive session, the board voted to adjust Assistant Superintendent Dr. Volora Hanzlicek’s contract for next school year, reducing her contract days and salary by about 30 percent. Her revised contract will be for 136 days at a salary of $64,000 plus benefits.
The board also voted to adjust Matt Garber’s principal contract from Sabetha Elementary School to Sabetha Middle School, and open up applications for the principal position at the Sabetha Elementary School.
It was the consensus of the board that there will be no building closures in USD 113 for the upcoming school year.
The Board will hold a special meeting Tuesday, April 28th at 7 in the evening at the Sabetha Middle School for further decisions regarding reductions and personnel for 2015-16.
