Petition to Repeal St. Joseph Smoking Ban Falls Short
03/05/2015

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) - For the second time, opponents of a smoking ban in St. Joseph failed to obtain enough signatures to ask the city council to repeal the ordinance

Buchanan County Clerk Mary Baack-Garvey said the petition submitted Tuesday had 2,197 signatures. But petition organizers needed 2,568 signatures to bring the issue back to the city council.

The group called Committee for Fairness in St. Joseph wants to repeal the city's smoking ban and replace it with an ordinance that allows 21-and-over establishments to choose whether to allow smoking.

The original petition filed Feb. 6 was 809 signatures short.

The group was led by Steve Peterman, owner of Peterman's Shamrock. The St. Joseph News-Press reports he declined to comment on the petition.
