Doniphan Co Voters Narrow Field of April Candidates
03/03/2015

(KNZA)--Voters in two Doniphan County communities went to the polls Tuesday, with voters in Elwood and Highland narrowing the field of candidates seeking election in the April 7th General Election.

Elwood voters had four choices for the role of city Mayor, with Timmy Kieser, Senior and Sean Hawkins coming out on top.

Those two now advance to the April ballot.

Current Mayor George Mitchell, Junior, did not seek re-election.

Elwood voters also narrowed the field of eleven City Council candidates, seeking three open seats, to six.

Selected for the General Election ballot, by the highest number of votes, were Dustin Robinson, Samuel Meers, Travis Holcomb, John Osborne and incumbents Glenn Watson, Senior, and Carol Hall.

In Highland, voters narrowed the field of eight candidates, seeking two open City Council seats, to four.

Vying for election in April, following Tuesday's vote, will be top vote getters Matt Peterson, Dana Clary, and Rocky Ruhnke. The fourth candidate, following a tie between Selena Diveley and Dennis Lentz, is not yet known.

County Clerk Peggy Franken says the tie will be broken by the County Commissioners when they convene as the Board of County Canvassers on Monday either by a coin toss or drawing a name from a hat.  She says state statue says a tie must be broken by lot.

All election results remain unofficial until that time.

Franken says a total of 429 votes were cast in Tuesday's election.
