(KNZA)-Two people were injured in a fire at an Elwood apartment early Monday morning.
Elwood Police Chief Larry Hunsaker says firefighters were called to the Birch Apartments at 505 North 14th Street around 2:30. When firefighters arrived they found one apartment engulfed in flames.
KQ2-TV reports two people who lived in the apartment were taken to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph for treatment of smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire is unknown. The Kansas State Fire Marshal is investigating.
The fire was primarily confined to the one apartment with the other units receiving smoke and water damage.
The Red Cross is helping three families with a place to stay.
The Elwood Fire Department was assisted by fire crews from Wathena and Rosecrans Memorial Airport.
