Second Harvest Kicks Off Annual Fund Drive
02/26/2015

(KAIR)--The Second Harvest Community Food Bank is preparing to kick off it's second annual fund drive next week.

Second Harvest Director Chad Higdon says the drive is an effort to help with the large number of children, families, and seniors suffering from a lack of food in the local area and “we are looking at some ways we can curtail some of that but ultimately, making sure those that are hungry are getting the resources of food and support that they need. We estimate that one in five individuals is food insecure, meaning that they do not know where there next meal is going to come from. It's unfortunate to see that the need is so great, and that communities and households are struggling...we are here to help, and that is ultimately our mission is that we do all we can in the fight to end hunger in northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas.”

Higdon adds the drive started unofficially in January, and has already had some success. He says “we are excited with the opportunity through the support we were able to receive we will continue to maintain a high level of service through direct service programs like backpack buddies and our senior box distribution program...in addition to providing support to our network of 100 partner agencies.”

The Second Harvest Food Bank fund drive will kick off with a luncheon starting at 11:30 Wednesday at the Riverfront Community Center in Leavenworth. Those interested in attending should RSVP no later than the end of the day Monday by calling 816-364-3663. Tickets are $15 per person.
