New Falls City Representative Appointed to Nemaha NRD Board
02/19/2015

(KLZA)-- The Nemaha Natural Resources District Board of Directors have approved the appointment of Alan Romine of Falls City to fill the vacancy in Subdistrict 10, left vacant when no one filed to run for the spot in the 2014 general election.  Romine will serve through the end of 2016.  At that point the position will come up for election again to complete the last two years of the four-year position.

With the appointment of Romine, one spot remains to be filled in the Nebraska City area. Subdistrict 4 was left empty following the death of John Albrecht in September. Interested persons may send a letter to the Nemaha NRD prior to the March 12 meeting in order to be considered. The position will come up for election in 2016.

Duane Sugden of Sterling was selected to serve as the NRD’s representative to the Five Rivers RC&D board.  Development and submission of a project implementation plan for the Nemaha Basin Planning Project was also given approval.  The plan will help ensure the District is eligible to receive future grant funding from EPA for non-profit source pollution programs.

A pair of pre-applications were reviewed for the Nemaha NRD Districts annual urban special project program.  Matching funds of up to $25,000 per project are available for such things as trails, pond rehabilitation, native plantings, and outdoor classrooms in urban settings.  In January the staff reported a grant for upgrading a section of the Steamboat Trace had not received approval from the state’s Recreational Trails Program. Since then enough funds were unused on other projects to allow the application to be approved.

An amendment to an agreement previously approved with Nemaha County, Nebraska for upgrading a county road connected with the Duck Creek watershed project was reviewed. The amendment spells out the financial responsibilities of both parties, which include a $300,000 commitment from the County over three years along with $100,000 of in-kind work.  The NRD Board approved the amendment, which will now go back to Nemaha County for their final approval.
