One Arrested, One Injured, in Jackson Co Pursuit

(KNZA)--One person was arrested, and another injured, following a vehicle pursuit in southern Jackson County late Friday night.

Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse says a sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a 2000 Chevy Cavalier near 110th Road and southbound U.S. Highway 75 about 11:30.  The vehicle slowed down and then allegedly sped away with failing to yield to the deputy.

A vehicle pursuit ensued and continued westbound on 94th Road stopping west of O.4 Road or just east of Landon Road in Shawnee County.  The driver fled the vehicle and ran north across a wire fence and went down into a creek bed where he apparently fell.

Jackson County EMS, Hoyt Fire, Mayetta Fire, and Delia Fire responded.  Morse says rescue units were able to remove the driver who was identified as 36-year-old Delia resident Samuel Anthony Mitchell from the creek bottom. He says Mitchell suffered an apparent fractured leg, and was transported to a Topeka hospital for treatment.

A passenger in the vehicle, 19-year-old Delia resident Candace Richole Johnson, was arrested on the scene.  Morse says Johnson was allegedly in the possession of stolen financial cards that had previously been reported stolen on February 10th to the sheriff’s office.  Johnson was booked into the Jackson County Jail for two counts of theft, theft by deception and criminal use of a financial card. Bond was set at $7,500.

Mitchell was found to be in possession of substances believed to be methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.  Charges on Mitchell are anticipated.  A third occupant of the vehicle was released at the scene.
