(KAIR)--Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt has announced that 227 victims of violent crime have been awarded financial assistance.
Schmidt made the announcement Friday, saying the awards were approved by the Kansas Crime Victims Compensation Board during their monthly meeting Thursday. Awards were made in 127 new cases, and additional expenses were paid in 103 previously submitted cases.
The awards totaled just over $290,000.
The three-member board determines claims that are eligible for payment and how much money will be awarded in each case. Awards are limited to a total amount of $25,000, with limitations of $5,000 for funeral expenses, $15,000 for mental health treatment, and $1,500 for grief counseling for family survivors of homicide victims.
A portion of court costs and fines, inmates wages, parole fees, and restitution paid by convicted offenders provides funding to the program.
