Late Tribal Leader Remembered
01/23/2015

(KNZA)--The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation is remembering Gary Mitchell as one of their greatest tribal leaders.

Mitchell, of Mayetta, died Friday at the age of 63 in Topeka.

He was currently serving as the chairman of the tribe's Gaming Commission.

Before he began that role, Mitchell was elected to serve on the Tribal Council as chairman, vice-chairman, and treasurer, for a total of 18-years of service.

Mitchell is remembered as a driving force when the Tribal-State gaming compact was legislated during the 1990s, leading to the construction of what is now known as the Prairie Band Casino and Resort.

Services for Mitchell are being handled under the direction of the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton.
