(KAIR)--City of Atchison utility customers beware: that caller claiming to be working for the city is most likely a scammer.
That word from Atchison officials Friday, with a post on the official city Facebook page warning of the scam.
The scam works like this: a city resident answers the phone to be greeted by a voice saying the would-be-victim's water will be shut off if they don't make an immediate payment by phone. The caller is making an apparent attempt to rip-off the person on the other end of the phone by gaining personal financial information.
If such a phone call is received, provide no information to the caller. Simply hang up and notify police at (913)367-5525.
