(KAIR)--The trial for an Atchison man accused of child abuse has been put on hold in order for a possible plea deal to be made.
21-year-old Brett Betts was scheduled to stand trail Tuesday in Atchison County District Court on felony child abuse and aggravated battery charges stemming from a February 2014 incident in which Betts' four month old daughter sustained permanent brain damage from injuries connected with shaken baby syndrome.
Betts is next scheduled to appear in court Friday morning, where he will also face new charges of burglary and theft that stem from a December incident in which he allegedly removed several saws from a residence undergoing construction in the 600 block of North Second Street. He was released on bond, awaiting trial on the child abuse related charges when the alleged theft occurred.
