(KAIR)--The Atchison City Commission has taken the first step towards construction of a pedestrian trail that would run from U.S. 59 Highway to the Atchison Hospital, running alongside U.S. 73 Highway.
The Commission on Monday approved a topographical survey contract with Clark Surveying for approximately $28,000. City Public Works and Utilities Director Justin Pregont says the company will do all the preliminary work needed for the project. They will go out and get a comprehensive topographical survey of the entire corridor the trail be placed in. Pregont says this allows city engineers to find the best and most cost effective route to take the trail.
Once they are finished, Pregont says the city's engineering department will take a few months to further design the trail. The city will then work with the Kansas Department of Transportation to put together a complete construction schedule.
Pregont says that construction on the trail will start no earlier than 2016.
