(KAIR)--A rural Meriden man who shot himself after a standoff with law enforcement officials Monday night, has died.
According to Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Herrig, Daniel Shapiro died Tuesday night at Topeka's Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center after shooting himself during the nearly five hour long standoff. Herrig says that no other shots were fired, and no one else was injured.
The standoff started after Shapiro allegedly made threats against the Sheriff's office and the court system. Herrig says he felt that the threat was real enough to get the Kansas Bureau of Investigation involved. Both the KBI's High Risk Team and deputies from Jefferson County Sheriff's Office arrived at Shapiro's residence, located at 6391 Hickory Point, near Lake Perry to serve a felony warrant.
Herrig says the standoff ended after authorities were finally able to make entry into the home using KBI's ram and entry robot. When the robot proved to be ineffective due to the amount of obstacles in the home, Herrig says an entry team was used to enter.
Shapiro's wife, Sharon Nero, was arrested at the scene, but Herrig says she was released later that night.
