Schedule Change Proposed at Hiawatha Schools
12/10/2014

(KNZA)--A schedule change is being proposed at the Hiawatha High School and Middle School for next school year.

High School Principal Andrew Gaddis presented the proposal to the Board of Education Monday evening, which calls for both schools to be on the same schedule--a traditional 7 period day.

The change would have the biggest impact at the high school where students would attend seven 50-minute courses per day instead of the current four 85-minute courses per day on alternating days.

Superintendent Penny Hargrove said the schedule change is necessary due to a reduction in staff in recent years coupled with the introduction of CTE courses offered by high school teachers at the middle school.

Some board members expressed concern about the proposal. Board member Denise Elfner questioned the need for a schedule change.

Gaddis admitted high school students don't like the proposal.

A decision was tabled until a special board meeting on December 17th at 7 in the evening.
