Atchison County native Jeff Schuele, shown here in this MSC News file photo, has been appointed as the new Executive Director of Live Well, Live Atchison.
(KAIR)--Atchison County officials are deciding what to do with a bridge that was damaged when a combine tried to cross it earlier this month.
According to Commission Chairman Jeff Schuele, several different options have been discussed including closing it or replacing it with a bridge with a higher weight limit. Since replacing it would cost nearly $160,000, Schuele says this would not be feasible given the low traffic in the area.
Schuele says putting in culverts is an option, but it may not be possible, because it limits the repair choices for the bridge, which crosses 238th Road just east of Ellsworth Road, and raises the question of how to enforce the posted weight limit.
Schuele says that with all other factors being equal, as long as the county receives an insurance settlement for the damaged bridge, they would lean towards replacing the bridge to what it was before the damage took place.
