Historic Church and Cemetery Recognized
11/13/2014

(KNZA)--A historic Leavenworth County property has been nominated for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Properties.

The Kansas Historical Society, during their regular quarterly meeting this month, voted to see the Little Stranger Church and Cemetery included in the registry.

The wood frame church was built in 1868, and is cited as the oldest wood-frame church in Kansas. The church, whose roots date back to a group of Farley, Missouri settlers who arrived in Leavenworth County in 1858, closed its doors permanently as a church in 1919 due to a flu epidemic.

In 1929, it again began to be used as a meeting place for various organizations through the mid-20th century.

The church, with a rectangular form and gable-front roof, represents mid-19th century building techniques.

The cemetery includes more than 100 graves, and may have pre-dated the construction of the church. It's nominated for its local significance in the area of early settlement history and architecture.

The church and cemetery is among six other Kansas nominations forwarded to the office of the Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places in Washington D.C. Following evaluation, a decision will be made regarding inclusion on the National Register.
