(KAIR)--The Atchison City Commission has approved updates to several different city building codes.
City Community Development Director Stephanie Leif came before the commission Monday afternoon to present the proposed updates to electrical, plumbing, and construction codes.
Leif says some of the updates concerned the installation of fire sprinklers in residential buildings constructed in the city. She says that the 2012 version of the international building code and residential code had requirements for sprinklers to be installed in all residences, but a lot of cities have found that that can be pretty costly. So the wording in current codes were changed to give the decision to install sprinklers to the property owner.
Leif adds that some of the updates were needed to ensure the safety of city residents, especially related to the plumbing and electrical codes.
The Commission voted 5-0 to accept the new updates. Leif says the changes should be put into effect by next week.
