(KNZA)--An elderly Hiawatha woman suffered minor injuries following a Tuesday morning vehicle accident in Hiawatha.
It happened when a car jumped the curb in front of the Hiawatha Post Office, and struck the brick column of the building's stairs. The vehicle then rolled back into another vehicle that was parked and unoccupied.
Police Chief John Defore says it happened shortly before 9:30. “According to the officer, she advised that when she rounded the corner, she was meaning to hit the break, and accidentally hit the gas,” Defore tells MSC News. “These type of accidents are not real common, but we do get them occasionally. We just need to be extra careful when we're driving and pay attention, especially when you're touching the break and the gas, which one gives resistance. Typically your break pedal will offer you a lot more resistance when you push it than your gas.”
The driver, identified as 79-year-old Jessie Snider, was transported to the Hiawatha Community Hospital where she was treated and released.
Police were assisted at the scene by the Brown County Sheriff's Department and the Brown County Rescue Squad.
