Sentencing Continued In Case Involving Former Truancy Officer

(KAIR)--The sentencing date for a former Atchison-based truancy officer convicted of unlawful sexual relations with a student was continued Monday.

According to Atchison County Attorney Jerry Kuckleman, the continuance was granted because an expert that attorneys for 29-year-old Heather Robinson plan to use in the sentencing phase was unavailable.

Judge Martin Asher set a new sentencing date for October 20th.

Robinson had earlier pleaded no contest to two counts of unlawful sexual relations. In exchange for the plea, nine other counts of unlawful sexual relations were dropped.

Kuckleman says that Robinson could be sentenced anywhere from 31 months to 136 months in prison on each count. He says probation is possible, but the burden is on Robinson to prove that she is not a threat to the public. She must also show that there is a valid treatment plan in place to address her issue.

Robinson was arrested May 30th after an investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation revealed that she had had sexual relations with a 17-year-old student. Although the relationship was consensual, state statute prohibits someone in her capacity from engaging in such a relationship.
