JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Republicans and Democrats are joining together to override Governor Jay Nixon's vetoes of millions of dollars of spending.
The House on Wednesday voted to override 55 line-item budget vetoes, amounting to $63 million.
The Senate had completed veto overrides on some but not all of those items as of early Wednesday evening.
The overrides do not guarantee that the programs will get the money. Nixon could still freeze the spending.
The Democratic governor vetoed $276 million from the budget that took effect in July. He said some of the items were worthwhile but that the state could not afford them.
The veto overrides include $1.5 million for forensic exams of abused children and $4.1 million for a computer program that helps develop emergency plans at public schools.
