Political Info Sought From Schools
09/11/2014

(KNZA)--The South Brown County Schools of USD 430 were among 100 state districts, including 49 in northeast Kansas, that have been asked to provide information about the politicians who have been invited to their school events.

The matter was discussed Monday when the USD 430 Board of Education met for their regular session.

The district was contacted August 21st for the information which, according to the request, included elected officials in, or candidates for, the State Legislature, the State Board of Education or any statewide elective office.

The district provided the information but was unsure at the time as to why it was wanted.

According to Donna Whiteman, general counsel for the Kansas Association of School Boards, the requests came from the Kansas Legislative Research Department.

The Associated Press reports the department sometimes makes requests from lawmakers, seeking information about invitations extended to state legislators, state school board members or any statewide elected office holder or candidate.

Whiteman calls the requests made to the school districts “unusual.”

Kansas Legislative Research Department analyst Martha Dorsey, speaking to the Manhattan Mercury, says all requester's information is required to be be kept confidential.

Probably to stop people like Lukert from visiting schools to talk. Only time he seems to Visit is when he is running. Schools cant make employees sit thru meetings when politicians are asked to talk. Has to be a choice for employees. Garber knows this is violation. Debates are different in employee can decide whether to attend. Helps if schools give proper notice to candidates, and that should be longer than the night before the debate, Horton!
